Since 2012 the deep water trips into the Gulf of Mexico have been a mainstay for the Yankee Capts during the summer season. Since 1977 what motivates the wheelhouse of the Yankee Capts is always searching for something different for our anglers to fish for. To say that this has served our anglers well over the last 40 years would be a understatement. The Yankee Capts has always been at the forefront of new areas no matter where we fish weather it be Georges Bank, Gulf of Maine, Dry Tortugas and the Gulf of Mexico.

As our knowledge increases in the Gulf of Mexico, we have been spending more and more time west and north of the Pulley Ridge HAPC. During this time we have been exploring the Western Ridge. Depths range from 350 to 450 feet. We have seen excellent grouper fishing, muttons, yellow eyes, blackfin snappers and pelagics. Some days we have even had some bites  of queen snappers in 400 feet of water using the mutton tackle.

This new trip will focus in waters in the 300-400 ft range (conditions permitting), making electric reels unnecessary. As in the deepwater Pulley trips, long drifts over productive bottom will be the mainstay of the trip. In addition to drifting baits along the bottom, the shoal water fishery offers deep jigging. The fish on the western ridge respond very well to vertical jigging, with anglers commonly catching red grouper, scamp grouper, blackfin snapper, hambone snapper, mutton snapper, black grouper, yellowfin grouper, and much more all on deep jigs during the day time.

After dark, the fishing continues in a similar fashion. Anglers typically switch to drifting with bait on the bottom for continued action on grouper and snapper. Those that wish to keep jigging can expect action with blackfin tuna through the night. This trip is sure to be a jig fisherman delight.

This a trip for those who don’t mind working for their catch. Deeper depths are the norm. Constant attention to your terminal tackle on the bottom will be required. The rewards are obvious, this trip has the quantity and well as the quality.

All Pulley Ridge trips have a very SPECIFIC TACKLE REQUIREMENT LIST! Please refer to our tackle page and Be sure you have the ability to obtain ALL the required gear before making your reservation. Rental gear is not available.
